What Happens When You Take Ayahuasca?
If you’re considering sitting in an ayahuasca ceremony, chances are you’re feeling curious, maybe a bit nervous, and definitely wondering: “What actually happens when I take ayahuasca?”
You’re not alone—this is one of the most common questions we hear from guests preparing to attend a retreat at Nimea Kaya. And while everyone’s experience is deeply personal and unique, there are some common stages and effects that most participants encounter.
Let’s walk through the ayahuasca experience—from the moment you drink the brew to the insights you may carry with you long after ceremony ends.
First Things First: What Is Ayahuasca?
Ayahuasca is a sacred plant medicine brew traditionally used by indigenous Amazonian tribes for thousands of years. It’s made from two primary ingredients:
- Banisteriopsis caapi vine – acts as a MAO inhibitor
- Psychotria viridis leaves – contain DMT, a powerful visionary compound
When combined and taken ceremonially, ayahuasca can induce deep emotional, psychological, and spiritual healing. But it’s not just about “hallucinating” or tripping—it’s a highly intentional journey of inner exploration.
Step 1: The Setting and Ceremony Begins
At Nimea Kaya, the ayahuasca ceremony is held in a beautiful, sacred ceremonial maloca in the heart of the Amazon. The lights are dim. The space is cleansed. Shipibo shamans take their places, and the ceremony begins with an opening prayer or intention.
Before you even drink, you’re already stepping into a space of healing and safety—a space where the energy is held with deep reverence.
This setting is crucial. The “set and setting” (your mindset and the environment) strongly influence how your journey unfolds.
Step 2: Drinking the Brew
You’ll receive your cup of ayahuasca to drink. It often has an earthy, bitter flavor—and unlike anything you’ve tasted before. Most people drink it in a single gulp.
Then, you wait.
It can take anywhere from 20 to 90 minutes to begin feeling the effects. Some people feel warm, some start seeing colors, some feel a gentle wave of emotion or energy rising. There’s no “right” way—it’s a deeply personal process.
Step 3: The Medicine Takes You Inward
Once the medicine activates, most people begin to experience visions, sensations, and emotional shifts. This is where things get interesting. You may encounter:
- Vivid visual patterns, colors, or lights
- Memories from childhood or the past
- Feelings of deep love, sadness, fear, or joy
- Profound spiritual encounters or insights
Some journeys are incredibly beautiful—full of clarity, forgiveness, connection. Others can be challenging—bringing up buried pain, fear, or discomfort to be released.
This is what we call “the purge.” But don’t let the word scare you…
Step 4: Purging (Yes, Let’s Talk About It)
Purging isn’t just vomiting. It’s a broad term for energetic release, and it can come in many forms: Vomiting, Defecating, Crying, Sweating, Laughing, Yawning, Shaking and Deep sighing.
While it may sound intense, purging is often one of the most healing aspects of the journey. You’re literally letting go of old energy, trauma, and emotional baggage that has been stored in the body for years—sometimes decades.
After a purge, most people feel light, clear, and relieved.
🌿 “Is purging painful?” Not necessarily. In fact, many describe it as a sacred release. Read real stories from our guests.
Step 5: The Icaros Guide You
Throughout the ceremony, you’ll hear the shamans sing icaros, the sacred healing songs of the Shipibo lineage. These aren’t just beautiful melodies—they’re spiritual tools that help guide your journey, shift energy, and deepen your connection to the medicine.
Sometimes, the icaro being sung will feel like it was written just for you. That’s because in many cases—it was. Shamans often sing personal icaros to individuals during ceremony, helping realign and cleanse their energy.
Step 6: Deep Insights and Healing
After the peak of the journey, things often begin to soften. Many people enter a reflective state—gaining insight into relationships, purpose, health, and life path.
You might realize:
- What’s been holding you back
- How to forgive someone (or yourself)
- The root cause of an emotional pattern
- Your next step in life or healing
Ayahuasca has an uncanny way of showing you exactly what you need—even if it’s not what you expected.
It’s important to note: Ayahuasca doesn’t give you what you want. It gives you what you need for growth and healing.
Step 7: Integration – The Real Journey Begins
After ceremony, there’s a quiet period where you rest, reflect, and begin the process of integration. This is where the magic continues—taking what you saw, felt, and experienced, and bringing it back into your life in meaningful ways.
At Nimea Kaya, we offer daily integration support during your stay, and continued support after you leave. Because what you do after the ceremony is just as important as what happens during it.
